Holocene
by Bon Iver
Bon Iver - Holocene
The newest album is suited to this time of year, and I keep coming back to songs I didn’t quite appreciate before. We are living through the Holocene period at the moment, and the name’s origins (meaning ‘whole’ and ‘new’) are so relevant to Justin Vernon’s reflective lyrics.
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
It’s a depressing sentiment, but full of truth and acceptance rather than bitterness or nihilism.
And I could see for miles, miles, miles
And miles to go before I sleep.
Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright
Above my brother, I and tangled spines
We smoked the screen to make it what it was to be
Now to know it in my memory
