I Want You

Summer Camp - I Want You
How could I not love an album with a track entitled Brian Krawkow? Elizabeth Sankey’s vocals are stronger than ever throughout ‘Welcome To Condale’, reminiscent of Debbie Harry - emphasised by a backdrop of heavy 80s synths and movie/tv show references. The setting is the fictional town of Condale, which to me conjures images of the pastel suburbs in Edward Scissorhands. ‘I Want You’ describes not an innocent teenage romance, but obsessive, angst-filled love, adoration, admittedly perhaps felt by teenage girls more than others.
And if I could I’d squeeze your hand so tight every knuckle would crack
I’d wrap my arms around you and snap every bone in your back
The chorus reeks of a teenage diary;
You’re so smart, you break my heart
…but the knowing lyrics in the verses show Warmsley and Sankey’s dark humour, taking the teen angst bullshit to a much more Heather’s-esque vibe .
I’d make you love me so much that you’d ask permission to breathe.
The image of Claire and Bender swapping earrings in The Breakfast Club keeps coming back to me; the sincerity and intensity of young romance.
