Childish Gambino - Bonfire
Camp actually measures up to my expectations, which were sky high. They aren’t exactly the same kind of artists, but Donald Glover’s unexpected references in his lines;
So it’s 400 blows to these true faux(/Truffaut) niggas
reminds me of Frank Ocean;
I’m feelin’ like Stanley Kubrick
This is some visionary shit
referencing Eyes Wide Shut. They both challenge our expectations. Rap, r&b, hip hop - and all the related sub genres - seem to be having a huge boom at the moment, with so many new, intelligent and experimental artists trying to change the genre’s connotations. Whereas once hip hop was something I’d listen to as an occasional break from my usual musical tastes, it’s probably the thing I listen to most of all now. What impresses me most about Childish Gambino is that Donald Glover is a credible comedic actor and writer whilst being one of the most exciting new artists - not only in his field, but in the music industry overall. I have no idea how he does it.
I thought Camp was a little intense on the first listen, but it grows and grows. No fillers. I just wish Glover wouldn’t mention the Human Centipede because it makes me want to vom.
