Drake ft Rihanna - Take Care

Jamie xx’s ‘We’re New Here’ and Kanye West’s ‘who will survive in America’ sample has probably lead to Drake’s use of ‘I’ll Take Care of You’ (the Jamie xx remix version). Ultimately and inevitably, the original is better, the Jamie xx version is better, but it’s still a good track because it borrows so heavily from the original. Rihanna’s vocals don’t have the power of Heron’s, but she sounds refreshingly calm, if you compare this to her most recent belter. I always think she sounds at her best in songs like ‘Rehab’ or ‘We Ride’ as opposed to the club tracks.

There are going to be plenty of people who have no idea who Gil Scott Heron is, let alone having heard the original, and to them the track will no doubt sound revolutionary compared to the rest of the charts. I guess Drake is veering away from chart heavy tracks at the moment though - if Crew Love is anything to go by. Drake and the Weeknd’s continuing bromance has surely influenced ‘Take Care’; the stripped down elements are what Abel Tesfaye is becoming known for.
